BACKGROUND OF THE COLLEGE LIBRARY

The College Library which is the academic and information nerve centre of the College was inherited from the Yaba Higher College that had been transferred to the University College, Ibadan, November 1947. With an initial book collection of 4,000 volumes of books and journals that served a student population of about 2,600. The book collection has grown as at 2009, to above 70,000 volumes of book. The present ultra- modern library complex seats on 2,900.62 square metres; can seat 1500 readers and house 250,000 volumes of books asides periodicals. The building was completed and officially commissioned by the then military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on 15th November 1988. Efforts are being geared by the Library Management through the College Management towards upgrading and the IT skills of Library staff to empower them to adjust and be relevant in the new trends in Information and Communications Technology.

The staff strength of the Library is made up of 13 Professionals, 13 Para-professionals, 15 Library Assistants and 20 Administrative staff.

Departments

The Polytechnic Librarian’s Office
This is the administrative nerve centre of the Library, where all library activities and operations are directed and coordinated. All library communications with the College Management pass through the desk of the Polytechnic Librarian.

Reader’ Services Department is the public relations unit of the library, whose responsibility includes, the registration of all eligible library patrons i.e. students and staff, in the college community, it is also takes care of all charging and discharging of library books and shelving, and shelf reading of all books consulted. All Reference and Audio Visual materials are also kept, maintained and made available to Library users who need such materials.

Technical Services Department is responsible for the acquisition, processing of new publications and repairs of all library books and journals as well as contributing to the National Union Catalogue of Nigeria. Generating computer work sheets for the ICT department, production, filing and maintenance of catalogue cards.

Serials Department is in charge of sourcing, processing and disseminating periodicals both physically and electronically, hence, the college library with the approval of the college management subscribed to the EBSCOHOST (ebscohost.com) which gave us access to current subject related journals.

Information & Communication Technology Department is in charge of computerization of library operations.  This department is responsible for managing all the computers on Local Area Network in the library.  It assists library users retrieve information faster and easier.  The department uses the Lib-Plus Library Software Package to carry out its functions. Attached to the department is the Computer Laboratory with fifty (50) flat screen desktop computer systems. This Laboratory is used by staff and students for research and class assignments.

Archives, Research and Documentation Department is the advanced research section of the library by virtue of its collections.  The unit collects, preserves and makes rare books and archival materials accessible to library users, assists in the research works of staff and students. Keeps Gazettes, Editorials, Legal documents, Maps, Building plans Convocation speeches, Lectures, Seminars papers etc for reference purposes.
