Yabatech Students get Okoya Scholarships
Ten indigent students of Yaba College of Technology have benefited from Chief Rasaq Okoya scholarship award among millions of undergraduates in four tertiary institutions in Lagos State in commemoration of his Seventieth birthday.
The scholarship award, which was presented to the ten students at the College syndicate room, was made by the daughter of the donor, Mrs. Bimbola Omoyen nee Okoya.
The award, according to Chief Okoya while speaking through her daughter, is to show his act of kindness and passion towards the development of educational growth in Nigeria and his endeared believe in Polytechnic education which he was not opportune to have.
Chief Okoya added that it is from the Polytechnic that Vocational skills are acquired to be able to be financially and morally independent for any successful business magent. He stated further that the Polytechnic system needs to be given total support for self reliant and emancipation of the youth in combating unemployment facing the country.
The award, he said, will be an annual event to celebrate him, assist the indigent students to pursue their academic career in life and to contribute his quota to the development of education.
He said that Four million naira will be awarded yearly to Ten indigent students from each of the four tertiary institutions in Nigeria with each student getting N100, 000. The tertiary institutions are Yaba College of Technology, University of Lagos, Lagos State University and Lagos State Polytechnic.
The Rector, Yaba College of Technology, Mrs. Magaret Ladipo expressed the college appreciation to the giant philanthropist for his tremendous contribution to education growth and passion for giving hope to the hopeless in the society.
She appealed to the beneficiaries to keep the hope alive and work harder as shining examples to others to be able to win the award in another year and as worthy ambassadors of the college.
In appreciating Chief Rasaq Okoya the entire management, students and staff at the event rose to sing a birthday song for him with prayers for more success in years ahead.
Meanwhile, the College Governing Council has approved the appointment of a new Bursar and Ag Librarian for the College as Two new Principal officers with Six new directors and Deans as Heads of Service units to strengthen, sustain and maintain the standard and peaceful co-existence in the foremost institution.
The new Bursar is Mr. Olugbenga Ibirogba, who until his appointment was the Deputy Bursar and Mrs. Tayewo Adebowale, who also was Deputy Polytechnic Librarian of the college until her appointment is the new Ag Librarian.
Others appointed are Mr. Dele Mafimidiwo, Director, Physical Planning & Development Unit, Mrs. C.O. Akindele, Dean Students’ Affairs, Prince Adekunle Aranmolaran, Director, Technical Teachers and Vocational Project, Dr.(Mrs) O. Oyelola, Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, Mr. I.K. Oyeyinka, Director, Centre for Information Technology & Management and Mr. Moruf A. Adebakin, Director Yabatech Consult
