Department of Building Technology is undoubtedly the oldest in the School of
Environmental Studies, deriving its root since 1947 when the Institution was
created and named Yaba Technical Institute. Then, courses offered were in
Carpentry and Joinery.
departments were created in 1968, the department was known as department of
Civil Engineering and Building. Many of the presents leaders in the
construction industry were products of this great department.
the school system was introduced and the Building program emerged in the School
of Environmental Studies under the department of Building and Quantity
Surveying. With the blessing of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in
April 1987, the department of Building and Quantity Surveying was split into
two, and the department of Building Technology became a fully autonomous
Lecturers, seasoned Instructors and Technologists recognized by National and
International professional bodies abound in the department.

enrollment has risen to 450 in 2012/2013 session. Since the beginning of the
Building program, relevant statutory and professional bodies had accredited it.

College level. The pioneer Dean of the School of Environmental Studies, Bldr.
S.T. Oyefeko was from the department while Dr. S.O. Adebayo (Late) had also
served as the Dean of the School after winning popular vote in an
election. The present Dean of School,
Bldr. M.O. Balogun is also from the department. Bldr. (Mrs.) A.O. Araba of the
department had also served as the Dean of Students Affairs of the College while
Bldr. T.A. Abimbola served as the Director of Works and Services of the

department had also contributed to National Development by hosting the First
National Craftsmen summit at Yusuf Grillo Auditorium under the auspices of the Nigerian
Institute of Building (NIOB) while currently on the vanguard of training and
retraining of Artisans and Craftsmen jointly with Shelter watch, a

Department organized the first National Conference named “National Built
Environment Conference- (NABECON)” in the year 2009 with the Theme “ Harnessing
Infrastructure Development and Services for Vision 2020: 20” and the second was
also organized in 2010 titled “ Innovations in Construction Materials and
Methods for Sustainability and Low Carbon Future” while The National Association
of Building Students (YABATECH Branch) also successfully organized a National
Conference for students in September 2009.
