department is one of the three that make up the School of Liberal
Studies which came on stream in 2002. The other two departments are
Social Sciences and Mass Communication.
School of Liberal Studies replaced the erstwhile General Studies
Department which was inaugurated in 1985, as a service department, to
provide the general education component in the students’ curricula, and
to improve their knowledge of English, as well as the social political
and economic environment in which they live.
Through the teaching
of Use of English, Technical English, Communication Skills, Literary
Appreciation and Oral Composition, French and Yoruba, Languages
department has endeavoured to provide a broad-based education designed
to sharpen students’ communication skills, inculcate the idea of
national unity and at the same time prepare students for effective
leadership role and to make positive contribution to national greatness.
are fifteen (15) lecturers in the department, most of whom are pursuing
various Ph.D programmes in English and Literature, across Nigeria
Universities. These academics, who have also published quality and
relevant academic materials, strive to meet the language, literary, as
well as the communicative needs of the great College; hence, an average
of three hundred and fifty (350) teaching hours a week, are dispensed in
service duties to all the department of Yaba College of Technology.
