Welcome to Food Technology

WELCOME TO FOOD TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT.

The Department was established in 1981 to offer full time instructional courses in Food Technology, leading to the award of the National Diploma.  The Catering and Hotel Management Programme at the National Diploma level, was introduced in October, 1986.

Furthermore and with effect from October, 1988, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) formally approved the commencement of a full-time Higher National Diploma Programme in Food Technology.

Food Science Technology is the application of scientific and engineering principles to all aspects of food production, manufacture, processing, preservation and distribution.  It is a multidisciplinary subject based on chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and engineering and their applications in the manufacturing technology of foods.  The National Diploma programme in Food Technology is designed to train and develop the knowledge and skills of the manpower needed in modern food and related industries, as well as teaching and food research establishments.

It is envisaged that holders of the National Diploma will be well equipped at supervisory levels to meet the ever changing and challenging demands of the food industry.  At the completion of the programme, diplomats should have a good knowledge of the properties of foods and should also possess adequate skills in the production processes relating to all aspects of food manufacture.  The diplomates should also be able to carry out analysis and quality control of raw and processed foods with minimum supervision.

The Department was established in January 1981, the introduction of the School System in the College.  The past Head of Department was Dr. G. O. Okolo (1981 - 1987), while his successor is O. Owoso (1987).

The Department started in the 1981/82 academic session with only five teaching staff and two support Laboratory staff.  The teaching facilities were gross inadequate-with only two laboratories, space constraint added to the teething problems of the Department.

With the purchase of a number of additional equipment, the Department went successfully through the National Board for Technical Education accreditation exercise for the National Diploma in Food Technology in 1984.

By 1986, the staff strength of the Food Technology programme had considerably increased and further more the Department could boast four averagely equipped Laboratories for the Catering & Hotel Management Programme.  These include the newly-completed training kitchen, one industrial kitchen and a well-furnished training restaurant.

The courses in the Department are designed to run with a new orientation where high technical skill will be emphasized by involving the relevant industries in a stage of the programme.  The syllabuses are designed with substantial inputs from the Industries.
