COREG charges federal government to reinvigorate skills acquisition in schools.

The Conference of Registrars of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria (COREG)   has   charged   the   federal   government   to   reinvigorate entrepreneurial skills acquisition   in   schools   to   arrest   the   sprawling unemployment among the youths.

Rising   from   its   71st  Regular   Meeting   held   at   Plateau State  Polytechnic, Barkin   Ladi,   Plateau   State,  The conference called for a review   of the education policy in favour of reintroducing craft and vocations at the Junior Secondary   School   level   to   provide   the   foundation   for  technical and vocational   skills   for   self   employment, job creation, technological development and industrialisation.

COREG in its communique signed by its chairperson and Registrar, Yaba College of Technology, Charity Amakapabo urged the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to put   machinery  in  motion for  the establishment of a standing national conference of polytechnic and colleges of technology. The conference it stated would serve as a common forum for management and other stakeholders to address common and emerging issues affecting polytechnic education in Nigeria.

Frowning at the second rate position of polytechnic in funds allocation by the Tertiary Education Fund (TETfund), the conference enjoined the Fund to give priority attention to funding  technical and vocational education to achieve  the desired acquisition of  practical training   for technological advancement of the nation.

The COREG called for an urgent roundtable renegotiation of agreement between the federal government and the staff unions of polytechnics. ?Both parties should be patriotic, realistic  and   honest in  their positions in the interest of industrial harmony and national development, it cautioned.

It commended the Plateau State Government for implementing the 65-year retirement age for employees of the state polytechnic and its other tertiary institution.

HOUSE COMMITTEE COMMENDS YABATECH ON FUNDS UTILISATION.

Passport

The House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education and Services, at the weekend commended the Rector, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) for prudent utilisation of funds and the many projects completed by the institution within a short period.

The Committee, led by its chairman, Comrade Aminu Sulaiman thanked the Rector, Dr. Margaret Kudirat Ladipo for the wonderful job you are doing, which he said, kept the 70-year old College improving day-by-day.

Sulaiman, commended the performance of the College Cadet Corps, which welcomed the visitors on arrival, saying the performance gave Yabatech the first of the institutions visited in about seven states.

The comrade chairman said the visit was required by law, as part of the Committees oversight function because it afforded the members the opportunity to assess the performances of funds allocated to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) under their purview,  so that they could give commendations or knocks where necessary.

We cannot solely rely on reports and records sent to us by these MDAs, not that we do not trust them, but in fulfilment of the requirement of the law, we have to follow due process by ensuring that each MDA justifies the funds allocated to it. It also affords us the opportunity to assess areas of needs,he said.

Sulaiman commended the rapport between Yabatech Management and the labour unions, and pleaded that other institutions should emulate the College by promoting industrial harmony.  The invitation extended to the unions is a sign of cordiality. In some other places, they would have assumed it was an invitation to chaos.

Ladipo sought the support of the Committee for the quick enactment of the Polytechnic Act to assist in the smooth running of the sector.

The paucity of funds for running the polytechnics has been a nightmare we all have to share. I am using this opportunity to appeal that the committee uses its good offices to help shore up funds allocation to the sector, and assist Yabatech in developing the Epe Campus to further expand the carrying capacity of the College.
