The Rector, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), Dr. Margaret Ladipo has commended the Lagos State Government (LASG) for retaining the yearly tree planting campaign initiated by the former governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola saying the retention will contribute to the transformation of Lagos into a greener, healthier, safe and orderly megacity. Ladipo, in a speech at the launch of the 2016 Tree Planting Campaign at the Yabatech Centre, Wednesday, regretted that the assault on the Nigerian ecosystem in recent time has been intense. Trees are fell indiscriminately without replacement and this has exposed the environment to erosion and other natural and environmental disasters. She called on all Nigerians to adopt the philosophy of every person planting a tree to attain an environment that is free from pollution, erosion and other natural disasters. The Rector who was represented by the Deputy Rector (ACAD), Mr. Innocent Akhuemonkan congratulated the LASG for partnering with Yabatech on the yearly tree planting programme. This, no doubt, is in recognition of the importance of Yabatech to the success and sustainability of the programme. We share the passion of the LASG on this project, as we acknowledge the benefits inherent in tree planting which includes provision of shade, wind brakes, prevention of flood and desert encroachment, as well as reducing the effect of global warming among others. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said the 2016 campaign with the theme, Lend a Hand to Save Tree became imperative because of the peculiarity of the state as a coastal city-state. According to him, the fast growing urban development areas across the state must curtail the uncontrolled felling of trees and ensure all developers adhere to all the town planning and greening regulations. Represented by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, The Governor announced that construction work was at advanced stage at the parks at Shasha in Alimosho and Ikorodu Local Goverment. He emphasised that LASG would enforce tree planting along all new roads being constructed, create more gardens and ensure that all open spaces in Lagos are upgraded. The Governor charge all Lagos residents to support the campaign by planting trees to replenish fell ones as a means of self preservation.
