Marine Engineering broadly refers to the engineering of boats, Ships, oil rigs and any other marine vessel or structure. Specifically, Marine Engineering is the discipline of applying Engineering sciences, mostly mechanical and electrical Engineering to the development, design, operation and maintenance of watercraft propulsion plants, machinery, piping, automation and control systems etc. for marine vehicles of any kind like surface ships, submarines etc.

The Marine Engineering department was conceived in 2004 by the past rector of the college Mr. Olubunmi Owoso; this was during the former president Olusegun Obasanjos administration when the CABOTAGE Act was passed into law to develop local content in the maritime industry in Nigeria.

The vision is to build a world standard maritime school, which will have departments like Marine Engineering department, Nautical science Department and also run professional certificate courses in accordance with the international maritime organization standards as domesticated in Nigeria.

The first phase of the Maritime school started in October, 2012 when the administration of Dr,(Mrs.) M.K. Ladipo got the national Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to inspect facilities and resources available in the College for the programme. At the conclusion of the inspection by the NBTE approval was given to commence the programme in the 2012/13 academic session. The programme has since commenced. Theoretical and practical courses are taught in the department, students are taught courses on running and maintenance of marine engines and auxiliary machineries on board the ship, they are also taught courses on shipboard operations among the general courses offered in the polytechnic system. When the entire phase of the maritime school is completed, we will be able to train students in nautical science and run mandatory courses (STCW95) and the advance courses.
