Mineral and Petroleum Resources Engineering is concerned with the techniques and tools of  earth sciences, mining, energy systems and oil and gas engineering principles to exploits the natural resources of the subsurface earth for safe and sustainable use, development, detection, extractions and management that provide a capability to satisfy a stated need or objective with which people utilize material resources of their environment to satisfy their need and make life better for the benefits of mankind.   

Specifically, Mineral and Petroleum Resources Engineering is all about wealth resources of the Earth. Resources of the earth consists of oil mineral, solid mineral, natural gas and water resources systems. It is a field of study that encompasses all the three state of matter i.e. Solid, Liquid and Gas. Nigeria is one of the richest countries in the world with these resources, knowing fully that the energy that drives a nation is largely conditioned within the subsurface earth and to tap these wealth, Nigeria need high level management (technicians and technologists) who should be the capable work force in exploration and exploitation of these resources .


Mineral and Petroleum Engineering Department was approved by the academic board in 2015 under the past Rector, Dr. (Mrs) M. K. Ladipo. The programme was approved to run in polytechnics by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 2013 and Yaba College of Technology is the first to start the new programme, others that are running Mineral Resources Engineering are in the process of changing nomenclature to reflect the new programme.

This epoch feat is incomplete without the tremendous and unflinching support of the new Rector, Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe who commence the programme by providing the department with five (5) laboratories in Mining, Mineral analysis and processing, Petroleum as well as Geology and Geophysical and the recruitment of highly qualified academic staff. 

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Engineering is with the view of producing high level management who should be capable of carrying out core analysis, produce drilling fluids, mineral analysis, petrophysical analysis and water analysis as well as groundwater borehole drilling. Students will be involve in exploration of Geology of the earth, Mining operations, Mineral processing, Quarry operations, Drilling operations, Reservoir evaluations, well testing and logging interpretations, Petroleum production, Natural gas processing as well as Groundwater development. The Department has five laboratories equipped with high-tech equipment in Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mineral Analysis and Processing Engineering, and Geology and Geophysics.


Interdisciplinary Field

This interdisciplinary field combines the sciences in the following areas 

  • Energy Resources: Non-Renewable Energies are Petroleum Engineering, Natural Gas Engineering, Coal Technology and Nuclear Energy.

  • Renewable Energies are Solar energy, Wind energy, Biomass energy, Hydroelectric Power energy, Geothermal energy, Hydrogen Fuel Cells energy, CO2 Neutral Fuel Energy, Ocean Energy (Wave and Tide), MHD Power energy.


  • Water Resources: Hydrosphere and water quality, Surface water hydrology, Groundwater hydrology, Hydrogeology, Hydroinformatics, Hydroclimatic, Hydrodynamics, Oceanography and Metoceans.


  • Mineral Resources: Ore mineral and deposits, Mineral Science and Jewelry Development, Mining Methods, Mineral Processing and Mineral Economics


  • Geosystems and Natural Hazards: Geology, Geophysics, Geotechnical, Geodesy, Geological Fluid Dynamics, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics and Geohazards [Climate Change, Runoff, Floods, Drought, Tsunamis, Hurricanes. Volcanic Eruptions, Tornado (Tropical Cyclone), Whirlpool, Earthquakes, Landslides, Avalanche is a snowstorm invader, and Severe Weather]. Climate Change [Global Warming, Greenhouse Gases, Weather Effects, Hydro climate Effects]


  1. Philosophy and Objectives of the Department  

The goal of the Department is to produce high level management who should be technically self-sustaining, competent, and intelligible and have interdisciplinary skills upon the successful completion of the programme. At national diploma level (ND), the department aim to provide students with solid technical competence and analytical skills require for solving problems and being self-reliance. The knowledge and skills to be achieved through academic programme by the students are: 

  1. Basic understanding of the concepts and principles related to Geology, Mining, and Mineral Exploration, Petroleum Engineering as well as water analysis and Borehole Drilling. 

  2. Ability to pertain in best practices to drill, produce drilling muds, monitor and carry out core analysis, mineral and water quality analysis, produce drilling fluids for flow assurance.

  3. Ability to read and interpret drawings related to field trip, use of equipment and identifying mineral components. 

  4. Knowledge of groundwater development, oceanography and hydrology for fresh water borehole drilling. 

  5. Identify, formulate and solve reservoir engineering and geological problems, understand professional and ethical responsibility in the practice of engineering and geosciences solutions in a global and societal context. 

  6. Ability to calculate the reserve of solid mineral, oil and gas, data inputs, manpower requirements and the output from production. 

  7. Knowledge of well logging, well testing, drilling control activities, and petroleum production to ensure conformity with standards in mineral and oil industry. 

  8. Gain employment with mining and mineral industries, geosciences laboratories, and energy, oil and gas companies as water borehole industry. 

  9. Appreciation for the need of clean environment, safety regulations and industrial accidents preventive procedures in process industry. 

  10. Proficiency in the use of computers and its application to solve common mineral and petroleum engineering problems.
